WHat does storm damage look like?

Your homes roof is designed to withstand many of the elements mother nature has to throw at it, however some storms can be intense, and damage may occur. While you can do a safe self-inspection from the ground or looking out a window, it is recommended to call in a professional. 

Hail Damage

Hail forms when strong currents of rising air, known as updrafts, carry droplets of water high enough that they freeze. A strong updraft allows hailstones to grow large enough to fall to the ground. Simply put, the stronger the updraft, the larger the hail.

Once they grow large enough to begin falling, they speed towards the Earth as fast as 90 mph, taking around a minute and a half to reach land! Small hailstones usually melt before reaching the ground, but the larger ones do hit the ground and can cause extensive damage to cars and homes.

Sometimes you can see hail damage to your siding or roof from standing on the ground.  Many times, you will need a professional to do an inspection. Hail can bruise a shingle causing an indentation that may be hard to see but that can crack the shingle allowing water to infiltrate over time. According to Owens Corning, potential signs of hail damage may include:

• Other collateral hail damage around the house; dents on cars or other items on your house or in your yard.
• A distinct pattern of small round-shaped divots on the edges of the shingles.
• Indentations in the shingle where granules are missing.
• A large pile of granules at the end of your downspout; a small amount is normal, especially on new shingles.

Wind Damage 

When most people think about winds associated with a summer thunderstorm, they think of tornadoes. However, there are far more damage reports from straight lines winds than from tornadoes. Straight lines winds are winds from thunderstorms that do not have rotation. These powerful winds, along with down bursts, can reach speeds well over 100mph.

These powerful winds can cause damage to your roof or siding by blowing it right off your home. Missing shingles on a roof can lead to leaks and eventually, interior water damage or even mold. While you can check your roof safely from the ground or even a window, it is best to call in a professional so you can stay safely on the ground. 

Potential signs of wind damage:

• Missing shingles.
• Thin horizontal lines where granules have been worn off about 1-2 inches beneath the shingle above; this could indicate that the shingle seal was broken and the shingle was flapping in the wind rubbing against the shingle above it. To be effective against the elements, shingles must be sealed to each other as one watertight roof deck.
